Aspen's History

The community of Aspen was originally a summer camp for Ute hunters. However, by 1870 the first area settlers of European descent arrived in the area. The pioneers were mostly minors who were searching for silver within the Rocky Mountain region. Aspen's early settlers found fortune in the rocky region, and soon the town "boomed" as over 12,000 miners made the area their home.

In 1893, the repeal of the Sherman Silver Act caused the town to go "bust." However, despite the bust the town remained active due to the ranching and farming industries that existed within the region.

By the 1940s, the town was as known for its skiing as it was for its way of life. Aspen's modern day founders, Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke led the town to a cultural renaissance withe their holistic community vision that is known today as "The Aspen Idea."
